It is located in Geneva, Switzerland. It is an intergovernmental organization that regulates and facilitates international trade. Governments use this organization to establish, enforce, and revise the rules that govern international trade in cooperation with the UN System.
Eligibility Criteria for the WTO 2024 Essay Award for Young Economists
To apply for the Essay Award for Young Economists, interested applicants need to meet the eligibility criteria. If you think you are eligible, you may then submit your paper.
- Your paper has to address issues relevant to international trade cooperation and trade policy.
- The author(s) of the paper have to hold or be engaged in the completion of their PhD degree and they need to be under 30 years of age.
- If they are over the age of 30 years, they should be no more than 2 years past a PhD defense.
- If there is a case of co-authored papers, this requirement will apply to all authors.
- Additionally, if you would like to be considered for this award, essays should not exceed 15,000 words.
Selection Committee for the WTO Essay Award for Young Economists 2024
The academic selection panel for the essay awards is responsible for the selection of the winning paper. The chosen panel will comprise:
- Professor Robert Staiger (Dartmouth College)
- Professor Beata Javorcik (University of Oxford)
- Professor Alberto Trejos (INCAE Business School)
Note: Dr Roberta Piermartini (Chief, Trade Cost Analysis Section, WTO) is the one who coordinates the selection panel work. Professor Ralph Ossa (Director, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO Secretariat) is an Ex Officio member of the panel.
Prize To Be Won and Other Benefit
The author(s) of the winning essay will receive a prize of CHF 5,000 under the annual WTO Essay Award. If the paper is co-authored, the prize money will be divided among the authors equally. At the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the largest conference that specializes in international trade, the winning paper will officially be announced.
There will be an award ceremony for the winner of the essay competition that will be held in Greece at the Athens University on 12-14 September 2024. The winning author will be provided with the funding to attend the ceremony.

Publication of the Essay
The winning essay could be published in the World Trade Organization Working Paper Series. It becomes the responsibility of the author or authors (in case of co-authored) to endeavor to secure publication of the contribution in a journal.
Deadline to Submit the Application
Interested candidates are required to submit their essays by 3rd June 2024. Eligible papers will be shortlisted by the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO Secretariat by 17th June 2024. The final decision will be taken by the selection panel on 8th July 2024. The author (s) of the shortlisted essays will be notified only.
